AWR1642BOOST: How to continuously collect the velocity and position data from the AWR 1642Boost?

Hi, I am yang

I worked with AWR1642 Boost to collect the velocity and position data for several second when the object is moving.

I tried to use the Short Range Radar lab in the CCS resource. But I found this lab which can only show the figures. And I could only save one figure at one time.

I wonder if there are other software to collect the velocity and position data for several seconds by using the AWR1642.

Or save a lot of figures for several minus at one time?

Did you take a look at the mmWave Demo?

What type of object and what speed are you trying to detect?

Hi,

Yes, I tried the mmWave Demo before. It has the same problem as I posted. And the size of the object is like a basketball, and the speed is around like 36 km/h.

The main issue is that I cannot record data during the object moving which lasts several seconds.

Hi Yang,

The Out of Box Visualizer Demo has a record function - it will save the binary point cloud data from EVM for up to 10 seconds at a time. You will then have to write a script to parse the data into something readable.

There is a Demo in beta with a log function that saves the point cloud data to a CSV. Find it here: dev.ti.com/.../

Use the LOG button on the plots tab to save the CSV. You can then use this to view the data at your leisure.

I tried to record data by using mmWave Visualizer Demo, but I used the matlab to open the file which is the DAT file, but the information which is in that file is not what I wanted.

Can you show me some correct matlab code which I probably can open that file correctly and get all the information which I really wanted, please?

Hi Yang,

Find an improved demo here. You can use it to record the point cloud data into a CSV. You will have to use the LOG button in the Plots tab. It will download a CSV like the one pictured. Let me know if this is what you needed.

Thanks for reply me so quick.
I am still wonder how to open the dat file when I saved 10 seconds. In addition, I tested LOG START. I was very confused that what the fram, total, count and intensity means in the CSV file.
Can you show me some ways to open the dat file correctly and explain what these words exactly means in the CSV file?

Hi Yang,

Quick clarification for the CSV:

Frame: Frame number the data was collected in - each frame is made of chirps. To get velocity and angular data, we need multiple chirps.
Total: Number of objects detected in the frame. In the pic above, there are seven objects detected in the frame.
Count - object number in the frame
X, Y, Z - Cartesian coordinates of the detected object - depending on the sensor, there are 2 or 3 dimensions
Velocity - speed of object
Intensity - value of detected object's range bin in FFT

There is not currently a software distributable that decodes the .dat file created by the record function. The makeup of the file is described in the OOB User's guide at <SDK_INSTALL_DIR>\packages\ti\demo\xwr16xx\mmw\docs\doxygen\html\index.html. The OOB Visualizer itself decodes the data as well - if you are familiar with javascript, you can look at the source code.
