On the datasheet, what does it mean when it refers to the DEMOD_CLK as "optional"?. Is this in reference to an external clock signal that can be sent directly to the modulation block. If so, what does waveforms does it accept and up to what frequencies?

Apologies for the delay. The DEMOD_CLK pin is an optional pin used to test the functionality of the modulation block. There's an internal PLL which drives the modulation block. Please leave the pin unconnected.
From the OPT9221 (ToF Controller) datasheet, you can see that the SENSOR_DEMOD_CLK pin is for testing purposes only.
