OPT3101: Application for Human Counter

Part Number: OPT3101
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPT8241

Dear Sir, Madam,

Understand that OPT3101 can be used to detect obstacle in area with few LEDs combination operated by single chip.

Is it suitable for human detection and counter in a room? Any reference design or application note?

What is the difference between OPT3101 and OPT8241?

Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks.

  • Hi Hong,

Each channel on the OPT3101 is a single pixel TOF measurement meaning a single distance value is returned for that channel within the field of view of the optics. OPT3101 supports up to 3 LED channels, allowing up to 3 "pixels", but it returns a single proximity measurement per channel. Optics are external components from the OPT3101 and so can be selected to suit the detection purposed (long range, wide field of view, etc).

OPT8241 uses an imaging array to allow proximity to be measured at a large number of pixels effectively creating a depth map of the scene being imaged.

What are you looking for in terms of people detection? OPT3101 cannot differentiate between humans and other objects like passive IR can, but it is good for measuring proximity. Using all three LED channels and wide FOV optics people entering and leaving a room could be tracked. However, we do not have a reference design online for people counting.

    Best,

    Alex
  • Hi Alex,

    Thanks for your reply.

Actually this is my customer current design project. Previous model they designed with IR sensor, to detect human quantity in a room.
They are looking for improvement solution from there. Actually they get OPT8241 EVM and tested but the distance detected is not as expected (6m-7m). The actualy distance detected is about 2m.

Understand that OPT3101 cannot differentiate between humans and other objects, how about OPT8241?

If OPT8241 has the capability, any application note to help customer for design?

Thanks. Hope to hear from you soon.
  • Hi Alex,

    Please help to advise.

    Thanks.
  • Hi Hong,

This video provides an overview of using OPT8241 for people counting and detection training.ti.com/3d-tof-occupancy-detection-body-tracking-and-people-counting

We also have a reference design for this type of application www.ti.com/.../TIDA-00750
