FDC2114: Capacitive sensor with different frequencies

Part Number: FDC2114
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: FDC2214EVM

Dear all, I have two question regarding the device FDC2114 (a capacitive sensor used for proximity detection).
The question are related to this device but can be adressed also to other device developed by TI.

1) It is possible (with this or other device) to play with the frequency of the system (from 10kHz to 2.3MHz)?

2) Can this device or others device detect non-conductive material?

Thanks in advance!!

Best regards,
M.C.

  • Hello,
The operating range of the FDC2114 is between 10kHz and 10MHz, so it can operated within your specified region. I would recommend to keep the capacitance value low and increase the sensor inductance to get within range. This will give the maximum sensitivity to capacitance shifts. Additionally, the FDC detects the changes in electric field which can come from either a parasitic path to ground (human hand) or dielectric change compared to freespace. I would recommend to get an FDC2214EVM and test in your system to see if it will meet your needs.
    Regards,
