IWR1642BOOST: Bottle detection

Genius 5910 points
Part Number: IWR1443BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MMWAVE-SDK

Hi,

I'm wondering how feasible it is to use mmwave for detecting bottles. I'm interested in a non light source bottle detector solution.

My questions:

 - Is mmwave capable of such short ranges and resolutions? So what is the mmwave short range and resolution?

- How complex is it to make a test setup with the IWR1443BOOST for a proof of concept. And where to start?

- Refresh rate?

Thanks,

EVS

  • Hi EVS,

I think mmWave Sensors are going to be very appropriate for your application. Minimum detection range is about 2.5 cm and we have produced algorithm's with Accuracy better than 1 mm. The Basic Out of Box demo is capable of producing accuracy to within about 2 cm.

I'd recommend ordering an IWR1443BOOST and running the basic Out of Box demo using the standard Visualizer. After this you should investigate the labs in the mmWave Industrial Toolbox, dev.ti.com/.../

I think the High Accuracy and ROS Point Cloud Visualizer might be of interest for you.

Let me know if you have more questions.

  • Hi Akash,

Thanks for the feedback.  I will order the IRW1443BOOST and give it a try.

I have some more questions: For detecting a single bottle what do you estimate the detection speed is? in the range of?

    Thanks,

     Ernst

  • Hi Ernst,

Detection speed is actually configurable via your sensors chirp configuration! You can read more about it in the mmWave-SDK User Guide on page 14.

  • Akash,

    Thanks for the help.
I made a test setup with the mmWave_Demo_Visualizer. Only I need to have a lot of imagination to see something useful out of it.

I played around with mmWaveSensingEstimator to configure better parameters. For short range and high resolution I need to set:
maximum velocity and velocity resolution to zero. I don't need velocity measurement, Only is it ok to set both values to zero?

Next thing I will install mmwave studio so I can use the parameters configured in mmWaveSensingEstimator.

I also wonder Is there more information how to pcb design a 77Ghz antenna. Because that can be a real issue!

    Thanks!
  • Hi Ernst,

Visualizer is only intended to provide an out of box experience for users to see basic functionality of the sensor. It should also be beneficial to set your velocity parameters to zero.

If you have a question on antenna design then I'd recommend starting a new thread!

  • Where/how do I use the exported design.json file?
I'm installed CCS8 and mmwave SDK.
Only I can't find any demo project. So what I'm I missing?
    Thanks!

  • Hi Ernst,

Instructions for this are available in the demo User Guide: dev.ti.com/.../
