IWR1642: Radar on the rear part of a racing car - Max speed allowed?

Part Number: IWR1642
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR1642,

Dear Team,

My customer would like to use IWR or AWR products as a radar to be installed on the rear part of a racing car so to measure distance and speed info among the cars.

Which device do you think could best fit this application? In ds I read there is a 28km/h speed limit for the mm wave radar. Is that true? Are there any other devices which allows a faster speed measurement among the cars?

These cars are racing car and just run along a sporty-track so speeds are very high...

Many Thanks,

Antonio

  • Hi,

xWR1642 would be a platform that could be used for this application.

We are able to achieve higher speeds through extended max velocity

What is the max velocity your customer is trying to detect?

    Thank you
    Cesar
  • Since the car with the radar will also be moving, the velocity detected of other cars will be relative to the radar. Any detected stationary object will have the car's velocity, which could be filtered out if not of interest. The worst case I imagine would be a car just entering the track as other cars go by at full speed. I imagine the main use case would be while all cars are moving at full speed, in which case the relative speeds will be small. But the max doppler needed would be that of the cars at full speed, whatever that is.
  • Thanks All, any advice whether AWR1642 or IWR1642? Do you have some documentations describing this use case?

    Many Thanks,

    Antonio
  • AWR1642.  It has CAN interfaces that are standard for vehicle electronic systems.

I don't know of any documentation that describes this use case.  I would recommend going through the various training materials with an eye for maximizing velocity.
