IWR1642BOOST: a very clear signal is always Observed at 0 Hz,

Hi all,

I am trying to capture moving targets within 3 meters,like torso movement, using iwr1642boost + mmwave DevPack+TSW1400.

1.But when i captured data and visulize ADC data via using the Post Processing tool provided by RadarStudio, a very clear signal is always  Observed at 0 Hz. Is this a normal phenomenon? 

2.when i use RadarStudio to config the profile, I find that value of samples rate cannot be tune up to 15Msps  even i know the range of this value could be cover 2M to 37.5M,how can i fix it up?or something i misunderstanding?

3. I use Post Processing Tool of RadarStudio to process ADC data and plot a   Detection and Angle Estimation results figure. i know target shown as dots in the figure, but what do the dots of different colors mean? 

4.For my application scenario, do you guys have any recommended parameters of configuration of RadarStudio?could you share it with me?

    Taking your questions out of order 

    4) Please look at the TI training for specific automotive or industrial labs, TI designs this will help to give you a working example.

    1) The DC component can be self-excited internal to the mmwave sensor, can be a DC bias internal to the mmwave sensor, or can be based on close reflections

    from the mounting hardware for the EVM.  Given the +/-60 degree azimuth, and +/-20 degree elevation, the mmwave sensor antenna needs to not see any close in reflected objects.

    Under the Post Processing, Misc options, there is a DC removal option.

    2) the IWr1642 has a 5Mhz Complex 1x Bandwidth limit, the IWR1443 has a 15Mhz Complex 1x bandwidth limit.  Please see the datasheet Table that compares the features of the parts.  The 37.5Msps is the real sample rate for an IWr1443.

    3) the Post Processing detection, is the CFAR detected objects.  Depending on the Misc options, the CFAR mode, db SNR, the object being reflected, and the Rx LNA gain under the profile - Sensor Configuration, will change the number of detected objects.  

    I have included an example for Radar Studio.

    Thanks for your replying. It is really useful for me. I conducted an experiment with loading your example config for RadarStudio.

    I noticed that  there is a high peak of similar amplitude of mine near 0Hz in your picture attached too, but a stronger amplitude of the reflection wave of your target. The contrast lead to a more distinct  result. I  usually use  a  metal computer case  as my detection target but  obtain a  no good experiment result.  Could tell me what material is your target object?

    And  why the HPFs of corner frequency of 175KHz and 350KHz didn't work? according to my understanding, HPF  is abbreviation of high-pass filter, isn't it?

    I have an RCS target, with an RCS value of .5.   You can use other objects that are similar.   The metal used in your computer case, may not reflect to the radar Rx.

    I have also used a 12 oz soft drink metal can, which is filled with water as a target.  As an example you can trim the front of the metal feet to not extend past the front of the EVM board, or use a clamp to hold the EVM board (some customers use a camera tripod mount, and two pieces of velcro across the BP/LP connectors.   

    If you have two camera tripods, and can place the metal can 1.5 meters from the ground, and 3 meters from the mmwave sensor, you should be able to reduce the short range ground interference.   I have used a USB battery, 2.1mm barrel plug to USB for mmwave sensor power, and a laptop with USB connected to the mmwave sensor EVM for outdoor measurements.

    The HPF1, HPF2 filters have an attenuation, but if there is a short range reflection or self leakage the filter does not eliminate the peak near DC.  

    If you used the mmwave SDK Out of Box demo software, and visualizer, this is sometimes easier to use than Radar Studio.

     The 175Khz, 350Khz is the lowest limit for the mmwave software.
