AWR1642BOOST: Device not detected

Part Number: AWR1642BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MMWAVE-SDK, UNIFLASH, AWR1642

I have just started using the AWR1642Boost board.

I have installed all the required software and drivers. When I ran the mmWave Demo Visualizer for the first time, the serial ports were configured correctly and I was able to send the configuration to my device. However, doing so, I got an error about the version of the device. From the menu of the demo visualizer, I changed the version to 1 and sent the configuration again to my device. Everything was fine. I got the console messages. I then went to the plot command to see my outputs, but they were blank.

I tried a few things i.e. changed a few parameters in the plot menu of the visualizer to see if I see the plot, but nothing happened. Afterward, I switched off the supply and closed the visualizer. When I turned my device on, the leds glow like the need to and the device appears in the ports section of my device manager. The UART and data ports are displayed as they were initially displayed. However, when I start the demo visualizer again, the device is not recognized here and I get the error that hardware not connected. When I go to the serial port option, it says that no TI USB ports detected. I checked the device manager, but the ports are being displayed there correctly.I have also tried clicking the bottom left button, but it just displays "Connecting to target..." but nothing happens.

I repeated the complete process in another PC but similar thing happened. I am not sure what the problem is here.

Thanks in advance

  • I have also faced the same error after installing the needed software and updated version from Norton Customer Support to support that for working, but it is not supported, is there any kind of internal or external error! please solve it, I did not use it.

  • You did not use the board? What did you need from the norton customer support?
  • Hi Anum,

Could you please share a screenshot of device manager showing the enumerated ports after power up?

Also, could you please let me know if you explicitly flashed any firmware to the AWR1642BOOST or if it is running factory-flashed firmware?

    Best Regards,
    Anand
  • Hey Anand,

I am currently running the factory-flashed firmware.

    1) In the demo visualizer, when I use it for the first time, I am able to do the configuration settings and successfully send the configuration to the mmWave device (but don't see any output plot). But once I refresh the visualizer screen, the hardware is not detected by the visualizer although it is recognized in the device manager. When I restart my PC, then the demo visualizer recognizes the hardware but the problem occurs again upon refreshing the same window. If I don't refresh this demo visualizer and open a new demo visualizer (without changing/ refreshing the configuration settings of the old one), then the newly opened Demo visualizer recognizes the device but no output.

    1) When I click "Send Configuration to the mmWave Device", I get the console messages. But, I don't see any output plots.

    2) I am also a bit confused about the SDK version. What is this version? If I select version 2, I get an error about the version. The configuration works fine when the version is 1. Cn you kindly confirm what is this version?

The screenshot of device manager is as under:

  • The mmWave-SDK verson I installed is "MMWAVE-SDK  02_00_00_04". I am not sure why the Demo VIsualizer works when I enter the SDK version to be 1 and gives error when the entered version is 2.

The output plot is also blank:

  • Dear Anand,

I came across another user guide for the mmWave device.

So do we have to install the factory-flashed firmware manually?
What I did is that I just assembled the device and powered it in fucntional mode and tried to visualize the output in the demo Visualizer. But I reckon I have to add some files first in my device? Can you kindly elaborate this. This is because when I saw the console messages, at the end, I didn't get any reply command saying "done" from my device. My last message is just SensorStart.

    Regards
  • Hi Anum,

Could you please flash the xwr16xx_mmw_demo.bin from the SDK to the board using Uniflash and try again? Instructions are available in the docs\mmwave_sdk_user_guide.pdf in the SDK installation.

The factory flashed image on your board is probably from an older SDK version.

    Best Regards,
    Anand
  • Dear Anand,

I have flashed the xwr16xx_mmw_demo.bin successfully using uniflash.
The issue I mentioned earlier about the device is not detected doesnt occur now, but when I click the Send config to mmWave, nothing happens. At the bottom left, I just see "COM3:115200, COM4:921600 waiting for data ..."
I dont get any error message or any console message.

I flashed the device in flash mode, and I am using the demo visualizer in functional mode. I have power cycled the device in between the two, as mentioned in the manual.

  • Hi Anum,

Could you please confirm the version of the SDK from which you obtained the .bin file? Was it SDK 2.0.0.4 or a previous version?

Also, could you please post a picture of the AWR1642 BOOST here? I want to check if it's an ES1 or ES2 version.

    Thanks,
    Anand
  • The SDK version is SDK 2.0.0.4.

  • Hi Anum,

This looks like an ES2 board and you are using the correct version of the SDK.

Could you let me know which of the LEDs are on when you power on the board in functional mode?

    Best Regards,
    Anand
  • In both the functional and flash mode, red and orange LEDs are on.

  • Earlier, I was getting an error or console messages (without the ending "Done" reply) from device. But now, nothing happens in the demo visualizer. The ports are detected correctly in the configuration tab, but I dont get and error upon selecting the wrong version or the device. As in, I dont get any response upon clicking the "Send config to mmwave device".
  • Can you try the following sequence:

    1) Reboot the PC and do not start Chrome.
    2) Power up the board in functional mode.
    3) Press the NRST button after powerup - you should see the yellow LED blink once.
    4) Make sure that only the two glowing LEDs in your last picture are the ones glowing.
    5) Use Tera Term (ttssh2.osdn.jp/index.html.en ) to connect to COM3 at 115200 baud. See if you get any response from the device. (It should print "mmwDemo:/>" on the terminal when you press enter).

Can you confirm for me that the image you flashed using Uniflash was "C:\ti\mmwave_sdk_02_00_00_04\packages\ti\demo\xwr16xx\mmw\xwr16xx_mmw_demo.bin"
  • Please also confirm the power supply current limit that you have. It should be 2.5A or higher.
  • My bad, my supply had a limit of 1A. Let me quickly repeat the process with this 3A suppy I got now.
  • Dear Anand, ,

I have repeated the process with a new supply.

    1) Rebooted the PC and did not start Chrome.

    2) Powered up the board in functional mode.

    3) Pressed the NRST button after powerup - I saw the yellow LED blink once.

    4) Two LEDs were glowing

    5) Used Tera Term (ttssh2.osdn.jp/index.html.en ) to connect to COM3 there was no option of baud rate.

But, I did not get any response from the device on the terminal upon pressing enter. It was blank.

  • And, I have flashed the same file you mentioned.
    "C:\ti\mmwave_sdk_02_00_00_04\packages\ti\demo\xwr16xx\mmw\xwr16xx_mmw_demo.bin"
  • I have made another observation:
After opening the demo visualizer, and performing the configuration settings on serial port, I get "COM3:115200, COM4:921600 waiting for data ..." at the bottom left of the screen.
When I press NRST switch on the board, it says "COM3:115200, COM4:921600 Hardware connected ... " but nothing else happens, as n, no exhange of information.
  • Following is the process I have followed.

    1) Powered on the board in flash mode. Pressed the NRST switch. LEDs blinked like they were supposed to.
    2) Opened the UniFlash formatted the SFLASH.
    3) Powered off the device, browsed the bin file, powered on the device, pressed NRST, loaded the file. It was loaded successfully.

    3) Powered off the device, removed the jumper from SOP2 (so fenctional mode operational now).
    4) Started the demo Visualizer, Powered on the device, pressed the NRST switch.
    5) Performed the congifuration settings. Got the message "COM3:115200, COM4:921600 waiting for data ..." .
    6) Now, nothing happens when I click "Send config to mmwave device"
  • Dear Anand,

Thankyou so much for your help. The issue resolved and i am able to run the demo visualizer now. The problem was actually with the device version and SDK version. My device was actually of version 1.02. Therefore it was not working. And the initial problem was with the supply. The supply I was using originally was 1A current limit.

    It works fine now.
    Thanks again.

    Regards
    Anum
