PGA460-Q1: About synchronization

Part Number: PGA460-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA460, , MSP-EXP430F5529LP

I'm using external trigger mode.
It seems that it only compatible with UART_ADDR=0.

Since I'd like to use multiple PGA460 in external trigger mode from single PC,
I'd like to improve it.

When will it be updated ?

And how much is the time accuracy of the synchronization in external trigger mode ?
I'd like to synchronize them within a few micro seconds.

Thanks.

  • Hi Ippei,
The latest version of the PGA460-Q1 EVM GUI has been updated to version 1.0.1.7 to include external trigger mode support for all UART_ADDR values (see GUI's Help-->About for all updates). This version of the GUI will be available on the web within the next 24-48 hours (by 08/13).

Once you download the latest version of the GUI, it is important that you update the MSP430 using the new "boostxlpga460-firmware.bat" file to enable the updated external trigger mode sync. Instructions on manually updating the microcontroller firmware is discussed in section 3.2 "Flash Program MSP-EXP430F5529LP" of the EVM User's Guide ( www.ti.com/.../slau659 ).

The external trigger mode is accurate enough to ensure the MSP430 is able to send the burst/listen command to the PGA460 within a few microseconds since the synchronization is completely dependent on the microcontroller and not the PC-GUI once enabled.
  • Hi Akeem.
    Thank you for your reply.

I tried immediately. But, two problems has been occurred.

    1st:
I can't control multiple EVMs from a single PC after PGA460-Q1 EVM GUI was updated to version 1.0.1.7.
I followed below procedure to do this.

     1) Connect EVM-1
     2) Launch GUI-1
     3) Connect EVM-2
     4) Launch GUI-2

When I connect EVM-2 in step 3), GUI-1's "EVM Status" was automatically overwrote to EVM-2 from EVM-1.
It didn't occur in previous version.

    2nd:
I used "External Trigger Mode" on PGA460-Q1 EVM GUI. When the external trigger signal was input to EVM, the GUI was often crashed.
Do you have any solutions in these problems?

  • Hi Ippei,

I will revisit the multi-instance support of the PGA460 EVM/GUI, and upload the new GUI to the web once fully tested.

The External Trigger Mode is likely to cause the device to remain in an infinite while loop if the trigger pin is never toggled. Note: while the External Trigger Mode is waiting for the toggle, the GUI and MSP430 become locked until toggled or the MCU is reset.
  • Hi Ippei,

Please download and try the pre-released version of the GUI v1.0.1.8 at txn.box.com/.../bnys4xgz6lomuhz2unvovg2nidlfx459 for a more stable external trigger mode. Can you confirm if this version works for you.

I've confirmed that the multi-instance support does work on version 1.0.1.7 and 1.0.1.8 of the PGA460 GUI.
Please ensure you have the latest version of the boostxlpga460-firmware.bat installed on both MSP-EXP430F5529LPs.
