Many of our labs work differently; it is hard to recommend anything without knowing what you are doing. What do you want to learn from the experiments?

I am not sure I understand your second question. The radar will work in any environment, but will have some trouble detecting certain materials like cardboard and drywall.

I think you will want to make sure you understand 1D FFT - range, 2D FFT - velocity, 3D FFT - angle, as well as CFAR, which is the algorithm we use to detect points from the radar signal. You should try to implement each of these parts if you are trying to understand the basic radar theory.

Hi Mason,

The limitation of radar in general is the angular resolution and angular accuracy. These values are determined by the number of antennas, and this is limiting in most devices, including IWR1642. However, there are multiple mechanical techniques that can be used to increase angular resolution. One idea is to mount the EVM on a motor that can spin at very small degree increments, and then use the EVM to measure at boresight. In general, I think angular accuracy and resolution is an interesting problem for radar, especially as it is applied to more complex problems such as robotics.

Hi Mason,

The point cloud data is in polar coordinate format. Each column is one point. The first value is range, the second value is angle, in radians. You can use the function pol2cart to convert the values from polar to cartesian (x, y). See the user's guide link in my first post for more.

The fHist that is saved will only be 10,000 frames long. Matlab stores the last 10,000 frames. At 20 frames per second, this is 500 second, which is 8 minutes 20 seconds.

As discussed previously, the point cloud data is stored in polar/spherical coordinates. Please see line 586 - 591 of main_pplcount_viz.m to understand how this is converted to cartesian (x, y).

I believe careful analysis of the main_pplcount_viz.m script will help you understand how to work with the data that is stored in the fHist.

Please see an example of polar coordinates here.  pointCloud(1, :) is range.  pointCloud(2,:) is angle. These are detected points from the radar front end.

Tracked targets:

fHist.targetList.S(1,:) = x coordinate of every tracked target.

fHist.targetList.S(2,:) = y coordinate of every tracked target.

Iwer1642 seems to be broken, it will not be powered now, it seems that there is a problem with the power supply.
