TDC7201: Common Rise Time Signal

Part Number: TDC7201
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74LVC1G123

When Generating a start and stop pulse for the TDC7201, what are ramifications to utilizing a slower than 1 ns rise time signal, if it is generated by the same source? The datasheet recommends a nominal 1 ns rise/fall "maximum" time, but is not explicit in the accuracy/resolution ramifications. For my circuit I would like to create the required >12ns delayed pulse between the Start and Stop pulse using a one-shot monostable timer (SN74LVC1G123), to trigger the stop pulse for measurement mode #1 following a start pulse, however, I am not certain the 2.5 ns rise time would be suffcient.

  • Nels,

There is a 12ns minimum time between start and stop signal for the TDC7201 device.

There is no measured correlation of the rise/fall time & accuracy/resolution. Keep the rise & fall time in certain limit such that it does not alter the square wave to a triangle wave.
