AWR1642BOOST: CAN bus pinout on the EVM

Hello,

We are making a custom PCB for the IWR1642 IC and we're comparing our schematics with the AWR1642BOOST reference design.

Now, in the ref design, CAN RX pin of the `1642 is ball D13 (SPIA_MOSI) and CAN TX pin is ball E14 (SPIA_MISO). These pin are also shared with the SPIA functionality using a mux on the board (we ignore that).

However, cross checking with the xWR1642 datasheet, we see that CAN TX is routed to ball C13/C8 and CAN RX is routed to ball E13/B9. Not the same pins as the BOOST reference design.

Can you please elaborate, is this a bug or I misunderstood something ?

Which BGA balls should I use for CAN ?

Hello Guy,
I assume you are referring to the IWR1642 datasheet, IWR1642 does not support CAN FD. AWR1642 does.
The pins D13 and E14 are for CAN FD.

Hello Guy,
The EVM design was done for the Automotive CAN-FD as indicated by Vivek.
The IWR1642 uses CAN not CAN-FD, so as you have commented the pin usage changes.

Under the IWR1642 BOOST Technical documents " www.ti.com/.../iwr1642boost ", the new Cadence - RevA, and Altium RevB, there is a new design package. In the sprr256.zip file, is a CANMOD_071618.pdf, which describes the change needed for CAN.

Please review, and ask more questions if needed.

Thank you Vivek, this explains the issue.

We are working with the IWR1642, using it's available CAN interface (not CAN FD).

We will connect on ball C13/C8 and E13/B9 as per the DS.

I remember seeing CANMOD_071618.pdf before, but I missed the issue with the CAN-FD and the IWR1642. Now the modification is clear and makes sense.
