HDC2010: The limitation of I2C pull up resietor

Part Number: HDC2010

Dear expert,

As title, could you let me know what is the limitation of I2C pull up resistor?

The power source is from battery, customer would like to mount a bigger resistor to reduce power consumption.

Thanks!

-Ben

  • Hello Ben,

The pull up resistor limits are specified as Rpmax and Rpmin in the I2C specification. The Rpmax is a function of the bus capacitance and Rpmin is a function of the supply voltage limit and threshold for detection. Rpmin for 3.3V operation for 3mA sink current is 966 ohms while depending on the Bus Load the Rpmax could run into k ohms. Generally speaking for standard mode of operation a Rp of 5 K to 8 K would be mostly sufficient to meet speeds for a short trace and yet not sink current during the active transaction.
