FDC2214: Settle count and Reference count in Sensing Solutions

Part Number: FDC2214

I'm using the Evaluation Module for the FDC2214. In the Sensing Solutions GUI, I've had to adjust the Settle Count and Reference Count values when connecting different items to the sensor. The manual gives a high level idea of what these values do without going into much detail (e.g. it just says that settle count needs to be long enough), but I've had to resort to experimentation to find values that make the sensing work properly. For the sake of understanding what I'm using, is there a simple explanation for what these parameters do?

  • Hello Evan,

We have received your question & we will respond as soon as we can.
  • Hi Evan,
In simple terms, settle count is basically the time you need to wait before you can start collecting data. A sensor can be broken down to a RLC tank, and when the capacitor is charging the amplitude keeps changing. And the time it takes to get to a stable amplitude is called settling time. If you look into the datasheet, there are formulas on how to calculate this parameter. Reference count is simply the sample rate, so if your reference count is more your measurement will be more accurate because you're averaging more data points. I hope this helps!
