AWR1642: Could MSS work standalone without BSS/DSS/AFE power up?

Part Number: AWR1642
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1443

Hi Team,

My customer is designing a low power application base on AWR1642. Customer wants to use only MSS, when the system is in low power mode. Once the system required RADAR measurement, AFE/DSS/BSS will boot.

If it can, could you please provide the solution? Which power pin should be power up?

If it can't. does it means only AWR1642 + external MCU can achieve low power application? Customer required ~100uA power consumption for sleep mode.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Wesley

  • Hi Wesley,
We suggest to turn on BSS which stabilize the system clock to 200MHz (MSS and BSS).
There is no usecase of turning off BSS while MSS is on, in that case, we suggest to turn off the whole device if you want to save power during the idle duration.
With External MCU you can achieve low power application where ext.MCU needs to toggle nRESET line of the device to power ON/OFF.

If usecase is to capture few samples (and/or processing the raw data) and sent output to ext. MCU then go to sleep then I would suggest using xWR1443 which will be more power optimized.

Is this usecase for Automotive? If this is more focused towards Industrial then I would request to connect with the Industrial team where they can suggest you more power optimized solution.

  • Hi Jitendra,

    Thanks for your reply.
Yes, it's an non-ADAS application when the car is stop. The power supply is battery, so the power consumption need to be considered.

One more question, could you please provide the power consumption when the BSS and MSS is running on 200MHz? Then customer can decide to choose AWR1642+MCU or only AWR1642 solution.

    Thanks for your help.

    Wesley
  • Hi Jitendra,

Do you have any update on this thread?

Also, if customer want to use MCU in 1642, which power rail should be provide to 1642?

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    Wesley

  • Hi Wesley,
Please permit me a day or two to provide proper power numbers with MSS and BSS powered-up for AWR1642.

Meanwhile could you confirm if customer wants to use AWR1642 just as MCU or to use its RF-front as well. This answer will affect no. of power rail connection to AWR1642.

  • Hi Jitendra,
    Appreciated for your help.

Customer wants to use AWR1642 in radar mode(AFE+MCU) when the measurement application is active. But, most of the time, the AWR1642 will run in MCU mode(only MCU is active). To reduce the power consumption, customer is thinking about cut off some of the power rail which is not necessary for MCU.

So customer wants to know which power rail is necessary for MCU.

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    Wesley
  • Hello Wesley,
With AWR device you can't switch off part of power rails, better to switch off whole device (nReset control).
External MCU can drive the device power whenever it requires measurement data else make the AWR device in off mode.

And during measurement event, time and power depends on multiple factors for AWR1642- MetaImage size, configuration time, chirp/frame duration & size, DSP processing time (effect the power as well).

I would suggest you to check level sensing application of IWR1443 (TI-Rex) for the short time measurement and power off sequence. (contact Industrial team for the same).
