PGA460: Question on PGA460

Part Number: PGA460

Dear Ti Experts,

We would like to use PGA460 in an application where it needs to measure water level ranging from between 200mm to 3000 meters. The environment is harsh and it seems like a closed-top transducer is required.

Now we probably will use the UTR-1440K-TT-R transducer has 40KHz center frequency and meets IP65. Can we use the Direct-Driven Method for using the closed-top transducer for this range of measurement? Do you have reference circuit for implementing this?”

Best regards,

Peter

  • Hi Peter,
For the range of 0.2-3.0m, the PGA460 is a good fit. This assumes you are mounting the sensor from the top, meaning you are taking the distance measurement through air, and not through the water. If you need to measure through water, a higher frequency transducer (180-480kHz) may be required. If you intend on using a mono-static transducer in a half-bridge configuration, refer to the "PGA460 Mono-static Transducer Half-Bridge Driver Small Form Factor Design File" in the Design files section at: www.ti.com/.../technicaldocuments

Keep in mind that you will likely need to add a damping resistor in parallel to the UTR-1440K-TT-R in half-bridge driver mode to get down to 0.2m detection. The value of this parallel damping resistor may fall in the range of 1k-30kΩ. I encourage you to optimize and experiment with different values based on the system performance you require. You can start your evaluation with the PGA460-Q1 EVM ( www.ti.com/.../boostxl-pga460 ), and install the UTR-1440K-TT-R onto the half-bridge portion of the daughtercard.
