FDC1004QEVM: Liquid(Oil) Level Measurement

Hi,

I am using the FDC1004QEVM for measuring the oil level in the tube. The dielectric constant of the oil is between 2.2 to 2.9 (Varies with temperature and other factors). Is it possible to measure the exact level of oil using FDC1004? Kindly give me the information and suggestion related to this method.

Hi Karthikeyan,
Your application is possible with FDC1004. But, there are some limitations with non-water liquid level sensing with FDC1004. One is that conductive liquids will drain charge from the sensor plates, which will severely disrupt the capacitance readings. I'm not sure if oil is conductive enough to cause this, it depends on the type of oil. If the conductivity is similar to that of water it should be fine. The second limitation is the viscosity of the liquid. If the liquid will leave a film on the edges of the container or on the sensor, this will impact the capacitance measurements. Oil will probably have this issue but I am not certain. This will be an issue for both FDC1004 and FDC2xxx devices.
