TDC1000-TDC7200EVM: Milk Concentration Analysis

Hello! I am using the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM for milk concentration analysis using the piezoelectric transducer(1 MHz) provided with the evaluation module. The goal is to calculate the FAT%, SNF%, Water Added% and density of different milk samples. Can anyone help me on this topic?

Yogesh,

The TOF varies with varying liquid/material density. We can measure the various milk densities using the TDC1000 device. You can corelate the various TOF with % of FAT/SNF/water etc using a proper characterization of the same.
Please refer to the application note below, wherein we discuss the TOF in varying with the concentration of coolant in automobile.

I measured different TOFs in differently concentrated milk samples without any problem. Can you please spare some details on the corelation of all these TOFs to determine the % of FAT/SNF/water in these samples?

Yogesh,

You will have to map each TOF with a particular % FAT/SNF/water . I am not an expert on Milk & its properties.

But i understand that a particular milk density will have a certain % of FAT/SNF/water in it. You can start with measuring the TOF on known % of FAT/SNF/water in a sample of Milk and map each TOF with a particular % of FAT/SNF/water.

Hello,

Am I bound to use only 1MHz piezoelectric transducer on the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM or is there a range of frequencies possible so that different other piezoelectric transducers can be used with it?

Yogesh,

Typically we have used 1MHz frequency for measurement of TOF in liquids we can use a lesser or higher freq value transducer for the same.

Hello,

My concentration sensing application using the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM requires a smaller sized piezoelectric transducer (5 mm diameter) and due to unavailability of a smaller piezoelectric transducer rated at 1 MHz I've stumbled upon the following piezoelectric transducer.

Is this transducer suited for the measurement of TOF in liquids using the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM?

Yogesh,

I see you would like to use a higher freq tranducers, please note the higher the frequency of tranducers, the attenuation will be higher.

But we should be able to use the 2MHz freq to measure the TOF in liquids.

We've one more transducer in mind whose frequency is less than 1MHz.

The 400KHz is the resonant frequency for radial mode vibration.
Is this transducer suited for the measurement of TOF in liquids using the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM?

Ygesh,

Try both the transducers and select the transducer which gives you better accuracy.

I take it that the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM has to be tweaked to work with these transducers.

So, we've settled on using the two 400 kHz piezoelectric transducers (Tx and Rx) driven by the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM.

These transducers are mounted on each sides of a 5 mm cylindrical tube of length 11 cm.

As I've mentioned before, the purpose of the setup is the milk concentration sensing application.

What are the necessary tweaks in the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM for this setup and application?

Yogesh,

The RC circuit on the COMPIN pin & PGAOUT is centered in the EVM is centered for freq of 1MHz, you will need to tweak those values for a 400khz transducer. The rest of the circuits should be very fine.
