AWR1642: Temperature definition

Hi,

Fig. 2, in the document of "Self-Calibration in TI’s mmWave Radar Devices", illustrates the Rx gain and Tx power variation vs temperature, shown as below.

Please advise what kind of temperature is defined in this chart?

1. Ambient, TA

2. Case, TC

3. Junction, Tj

Hi Matt,

The temperature axis in the plots is the average of the temperature sensor readings from the temperature sensors located near the TX and RX channels in the device. The average temperature is also what is used in the device to decide if periodic calibrations should result in a register update.

Many thanks for your reply.

So it implies that this average temperature is board temperature. We can estimated the junction temperature with the thermal resistance described in the P.31 of AWR 1642 datasheet. For example: when power is 2W and thermal resistance is 6.57, then the chip temperature will be "average temperature"+ 2*6.57 degrees.

Am i right?

Hi Matt,

This is not the board temperature - this is the junction temperature. The device has multiple internal temperature sensors at different points in the die, and the average of these readings is used. The average is still representing the junction temperature.
