IWR1642BOOST: Trouble running out-of-box demo

Part Number: IWR1642BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MMWAVE-SDK

A customer is using IWR1642BOOST with mmwave_sdk_01_02_00_05 and trying to run the out-of-box demo.  In the Visualizer, they set the device and SDK version, and also the serial ports are confirmed.  When they click "SEND CONFIG TO MMWAVE DEVICE" everything looks correct until the final command to start the sensor.  They get:

mmwDemo:/>sensorStart

Debug: Init Calibration Status = 0x7f2

DSS Exception: dss/dss_main.c, line 1519.

What would be causing this?

We have run the people count demo on this sensor and it works.  So it doesn't seem to be a hardware problem.

David

  • Hi David,

Assuming that the customer is trying to use SDK 1.2.0.5, I understand that they have an ES1.0 Silicon based EVM. Is this correct? Note that ES2.0 Silicon boards are compatible only with SDK 2.0 and above. You can check the ES version of the IWR part as shown below:

From the returned calibration status (0x7F2), it appears that a couple of the calibrations are failing.

    A few questions:

    1. Is the failure seen with the pre-compiled OOB demo binary provided in the SDK or did the customer build the binary themselves? This would be the first thing to check.

    2. Does the failure show up with one of the preset configurations available in the Visualizer (i.e. Best Range, Best Range Resolution or Best Velocity resolution)? Or is this a custom profile configuration?

    3. Which version of the People counting demo was tested on the EVM?

    Regards

  • Hi Nitin,

Yes, they have ES 1.0 silicon.

    >> 1. Is the failure seen with the pre-compiled OOB demo binary provided in the SDK or did the customer build the binary themselves? This would be the first thing to check.

    Pre-compiled binary.

    >> 2. Does the failure show up with one of the preset configurations available in the Visualizer (i.e. Best Range, Best Range Resolution or Best Velocity resolution)? Or is this a custom profile configuration?

    This is the preset configuration.

    >> 3. Which version of the People counting demo was tested on the EVM?

The one in Industrial Toolbox 2.3.0.

I will see if the customer can try a second board.  Any other suggestions?

    Regards,

    David

  • Nitin,

Correction. It appears customer has ES2.0 silicon (devices are marked 502AC, but no sticker on the board). I will have them try with SDK 2.0 or later.

  • Nitin,

With ES2.0 silicon, which version of the SDK and the Industrial Toolbox should they use? The latest ones?

    - David
  • David,

MMWAVE-SDK: ES2.0 Silicon is compatible with MMWAVE-SDK 02_00_00_04 and above.

mmWave Industrial toolbox: Please use the latest mmWave Industrial Toolbox i.e. version 3.1.1

Please note that the 16xx Labs in mmWave Industrial toolbox, including the 16xx - OOB Demo Lab are compatible with SDK 2.0.0.4 only. The labs will be ported to SDK 2.1.0.4 in a future release (the date for which is not known at this time).

This means that the customer can still download SDK 2.1.0.4 and use the corresponding OOB Demo (including building the demo using the makefile based build instructions provided in the SDK user guide), they need to use SDK 2.0.0.4 for building any of the 16xx labs from mmWave Industrial Toolbox 3.1.0.

Please mark this thread resolved if your question was answered.

    Thanks

    -Nitin
