I have an application that requires detection of presence of metal rod of diameter of 5mm whenever this metal rod inserted into 10-15mm diameter hole of double sided PCB. Would LDC0851 be able to detect the metal rod presence by having PCB traced coils around hole: one on top and one on bottom side of PCB? OR suggest other optimal locations of coils and number of turns.

Sam,

This isn't a perfect application. The LDC0851 does best when the metal being sensed is directly over the coil. In this application, the metal would either go through the PCB inductor or it would be to the side. I don't expect that you would get a strong response unless you can arrange the coils either to the side of the metal rod, or at the end of the metal rod.

This will not give you a great response. The coils will get the best response directly above or below the coil. Since the rod is to the side of the coils, you could have issues with SNR.
