AWR1642: & AWR1443 virtual antenna placement v.s FOV

Hi,

Based on application note "SPRY315 page 5", there are some examples about the antenna placement v.s wider FOV or narrow FOV, my question is i don't understand why the virtual antenna placement can reflect to narrow and wider FOV ? Doesn't it to relay on physical antenna radiation pattern ?

pls. help to explain more detail to me.

Hi,

The white paper mentioned emphasizes that the placement of the antenna will affect detection of the ground clutter (see excerpt below). The FOV of the antenna is defined by antenna design and not by the position of the antenna, you are correct.

"While a wide FOV in both azimuth and elevation provides true 3-D sensing, the placement of the radar needs to be well thought out to minimize ground clutter"

Q1 : Could you pls. explain more about the ground clutter suppression or is there any application note to talk about this issue ?

Q2 : Beside the angle resolution, what is the pros. and cons. of figure 6 a,b,c ?

Ground clutter suppression is achieved in software. There are several demos that implement this clutter removal that you can see below:

This is achieved by tuning the CFAR parameters based on the characteristics of the environment in which the sensor is placed.

As for the various antenna configurations, it is difficult to give a generic list of pros and cons without knowing the system requirements. These figures are there to provide a few different examples of alternative antenna configurations other than the the pattern that is used in our standard AWR1642BOOST EVM. Your particular use case will determine which antenna pattern is appropriate.
