IWR1642: FCC restrictions on 77-81 GHz band

Part Number: IWR1642
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR6843,

It’s my understanding that the FCC has limited use of the 77-81 GHz band to automotive and airport FOD. In the FCC 17-94 document where this is discussed, they seem to indicate the possibility of opening the band in the future to other radars, but not only is that uncertain, I also imagine it’s a way’s off, considering use in the automotive industry would probably have to be pretty well-established before they consider it (to ensure no interference) – this is the impression I get from reading that document.

As we move towards designing our own radar with the TI devices, the big decision seems to be coming down to which frequency band to develop in. Is it recommend for all non-automotive/airport applications to go with the 60-64 GHz IWR6843 to avoid this issue? Or are you still advising some applications to continue with the IWR1642 in the 77-81 GHz band?

  • Hello Ryan,

The 60GHz devices are the recommended choice for new industrial (i.e. non-automotive) designs. The 77GHz devices can be used in a few very specific applications outside automotive (like airport FOD and fluid level sensing in a closed tank) but as you have mentioned that band is very restricted.

    Regards,
