PGA460-Q1: Multiple transducer with single PGA460-Q1 for long range detection

Part Number: PGA460-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA460

Hi,

I wanna use PGA460-Q1 in an application to detect an object upto 7m.

I want to connect multiple transducer of frequency 40KHz with single PGA460-Q1 to bring major area under detection range.

Is it possible to multiplex transducers in transformer drive mode.?

If yes, Please share sample schematic for reference.

If not possible, Then please suggest an alternative way to detect long range  upto 7m. I am having a power supply of 12V DC.

Thank you.

  • Hi Vishal,
We will respond with a detailed answer after the holidays.
  • Hi Vishal,

Yes, it is possible to use the PGA460 to detect objects at 7m.

Please refer to the following E2E discussion for circuit details on multiplexing multiple transducers to a single PGA460 device:
Multiplexing in Half-Bridge Driver Mode for Mono-static or Bi-static Transducers: e2e.ti.com/.../603257

Note, this muxing solution is only compatible with a half-bridge driver approach, which still enables 7m detection when using an open-top type transducer. We do not currently offer a solution for multiplexing a transformer driven solution. If you need to use closed-top transducers, and a transformer driver to generate sufficient sound pressure level to reach 7m, then you will need to use one transducer per PGA460 device.
  • Hi Akeem,

    Thanks for your reply.

Is it possible to detect human in the range of 7-10mtrs.?
It will be great if u suggest any closed top transducer for the above mentioned range.
    Also, compatible transformer part..

    Waiting for your kind reply.

    Thank you..
  • Hi Vishal,

Using a closed-top transducer to detect a human sized target up to 7-10m is difficult to achieve with ultrasound. For a human target, you should only expect a best-case of 5~7m with a closed-top. However, an open-top transducer may be able to detect a human sized target up to 10m.

For a list of PGA460 compatible transducer and transformers, see the "PGA460 Transducer & Transformer Listing" spreadsheet at: www.ti.com/.../slac787
You can filter the transducer parameters based on your system requirements/preferences.
