AWR1642: Target speed value

Does the target's speed value refer to its speed in the vertical direction? Does a negative value mean that the target is close to the radar? Can the speed value of the target in the horizontal direction be obtained?

Hi,
If you refer AWR1642 SRR demo where it provides and plots doppler(Speed) for all the object near to its vicinity.

Negative and positive is application specific to distinguish between the objects going away or coming closer w.r.t. to mmWave Sensor.
In this demo it provides range/velocity/angle of all the objects available in front of the mmWave Sensor.
You can calculate vertical/horizontal direction object's speed by considering the angle and tracking of that object.

Do you mean that the target speed it provides is a scalar? How should I break it down into horizontal and vertical directions?

mmWave Sensor can directly estimate only radial component of the velocity, however with kalman filter you can estimate Vx and Vy as implemented in SRR Demo.
