OPT3101: Sensors to detect people presence 1m distance

Part Number: OPT3101
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA460, TDC7200

Hello All,

My customer is thinking to use a sensor on the external part of a video doorbell which should be able to detect the presence of person in a range of 1m.

This sensor should be placed behind a protective glass (4mm thick) and being outside it can be wet due to rain.

Whenever the person has been detected the display and touch panel of the video doorbell should be activated. Therefore the function of this sensor is very simple.

Any cheap TI solutions? mmWAVE is too much for the applications.

I was thinking of OPT3101 or TDC7200 or PGA460 or any other comments are very welcome!

Many Thanks,

Antonio

  • Hi Antonio,

I am in the optical group and support OPT3101 so can answer questions regarding it. For ultrasound support I would create another post with just that part so it goes to the ultrasound group and they can help you.

OPT3101 seems a good fit for this application. It can function under dark or transparent glass. With OPT3101 you choose the optics so the glass just needs to let the light of the emitter wavelength through.

  • Hello,

I just got a feedback from customer.

They said the problem of optical ToF sensors lies in the fact that in case water can be found on the surface of the glass, either when it rains or as a deposit after rainfall. In this case, water acts as a lens and negatively affects its optical behavior. This happens for other optical sensors like VL53L1X for a 4mm thick glass in presence of rain.

Do you also find this behavior? Any comments here?

    Many Thanks,

PS You can also contact me by personal email for further comments
