AWR1642: Questions about RX gain setting

Part Number: AWR1642

Hi expert,

Customer has two questions about RX gain setting on AWR1642.

1. We know RX gain = RF gain + IF gain. If we need 35dB RX gain, which combination could get better NF performance, (34+1) or (30+5) or (26+9) (No saturation on LNA)?

2. Can we get better SNR after ADC if we increase RX gain from 30dB to 33dB when no saturation on ADC?

Thank you.

Allen

  • Hello Allen,

    >>1. We know RX gain = RF gain + IF gain. If we need 35dB RX gain, which combination could get better NF performance, (34+1) or (30+5) or (26+9)
    >>(No saturation on LNA)?

Using higher RF gain improves the NF. So for best noise figure use the highest RF gain. But it will degrade the P1dB point.

    >>2. Can we get better SNR after ADC if we increase RX gain from 30dB to 33dB when no saturation on ADC?
Increasing RX gain does no improve the SNR. The gain is seen by signal and noise. Using higher RF gain can improve the SNR slightly if the noise figure improves.

  • Vivek,

Thanks. Customer will do tests accordingly.
