AWR1642: Use Tx backoff to reduce Tx gain but the peak/mean power consumption is not reduced

Part Number: AWR1642

Hi,

SW: mmWave SDK 2.1
HW: AWR1642 ES2.0

We Use Tx backoff to reduce Tx gain. From the RF measurement, we make sure Tx gain is reduced like 6dB, 12dB ...etc
However, when we measure power consumption (from 5V input) we found peak/average power is almost no difference.

That means even we reduce Tx power, we can't save power.

Is this the known result?

  • Hello James,
Using the Tx backoff only reduces the Tx output power but the Tx blocks are all still in full operational mode and not turned off.
We will have power saving only when any of there Rx or Tx RF blocks are turned off. Some of these blocks are turned off only during the inter-chirp or inter-frame period and you will have power saving only during these periods.

    Thanks,
    Raghu
