PGA450-Q1: Long range ultrasonic sensor to detect boats up to 10m

Part Number: PGA450-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA460

Hello,

I'm working on an ultrasonic sensor to detect boats from 50cm to 10 meters.

The detection distance for PGA460 is 5m and 7m for PGA450.

So is there any solution to increase the detection distance ? put several emitter simultaneously ? another technical solution / IC ?

Do you have any suggestions regarding the type of tranceivers and frequency ?

Any feedback is welcome so that I can move towards the best technical solutions for this application.

I look forward to your reply and thanks for your help

Thomas

  • Hi Thomas,

I recommend the PGA460 for this application. The PGA460's round trip time of flight record length timer can be set to 65ms, which is the equivalent of 11m. The 5m maximum was a use-case example for park assist when attempting to detect a narrow pole. Considering your target is a boat (large flat surface), you should have no issue in long range detection(10m) when using a low-frequency (30-80kHz) transducer.

You can find a list of compatible transducers here: www.ti.com/.../slac787
