PGA450Q1EVM: Sensors resolution and range

Part Number: PGA450Q1EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA460

Hello

  • Has PGA450 been superseded by PGA460 or are they two different things?
  • If they are two different things does the PGA450 include the actual ultrasonic sensors?
  • If sensors are included what is the distance measurement range of these transducers?
  • What is the resolution of these sensors
  • Can we get data-sheet(s) for these sensors?

Regards

Sam

  • Sam,

We will respond to your question by tomorrow.
  • Sam,
    Responding to your questions:

    1) Yes, the PGA450 has been superseded by the PGA460. The PGA460 is recommended for new designs.

    2) Both devices are integrated ultrasonic signal driver and receiver ICs. The primary difference is that the PGA450 requires firmware programming, while the PGA460 has a fixed digital statement machine to handle the time of flight measurement. The PGA460 does not require any firmware programming, making it easier to integrate into a system. The PGA460 also yields improved performance and lower cost.

    3) The range of a transducer is dependent on several factors. See the "PGA460 Ultrasonic Module Hardware and Software Optimization" app note (www.ti.com/.../slaa732) for a complete description on these ranging factors. Typically, air-coupled ultrasonic applications target a range between 1cm to 15m.

    4) Single object resolution is dependent on the PGA4xx's ADC, which is 1MHz, converting to <1cm step resolution. For multiple device detection/separation, the frequency must be considered. See the aforementioned app note for details, but typical separation is at 1cm resolution.

    5) The datasheets for the sensors is available directly through the sensor manufacturer. For a full list of transducers, see the "PGA460 Transducer & Transformer Listing" ( www.ti.com/.../slac787 ).
