IWR1443BOOST: TPS79601 U9 potentially failed

Part Number: IWR1443BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1443

HI,

one of our customers has been using the IWR1443 BOOST and noticed a power failure. Further diagnosing exposed that the device U9, TPS79601 was blown. The customer found a hard short to GND on the net 5V_IN. The output of U9 powers the TM4C129 MCU with 3.3V. The thought was that the MCU may have drawn to much current for the U9 to handle.

Therefore the customer removed R176.

Could you check into whether we have seen the U9 fail in other cases as well?

Thanks,

--Gunter

  • Hello,

Typically this kind of failure occurs if somebody inserts wrong power supply higher than 5V input (such as 12V), Then this kind of damage could be expected. Or some electrical over stress could have caused the damage to U9 and subsequent load circuits.

After replacing U9 and/or TM4C129 MCU device, Did customer able to revive the board?

    Thanks and regards,
    CHETHAN KUMAR Y.B.
