LDC1612: distance between the sensing coil to LDC1612

Part Number: LDC1612

Hi team,

My customer is evaluating LDC1612 for some paper height sensing application and would like to design the LDC1612 in the main board and the sensing coil will be a distance away (around 14 ~ 15 inches), using twisted pair cable. Could LDC1612 sense properly with such a long wire, and any key concerns and design requirements?

Thanks

  • Hi Sai,

The LDC1612 can use remote sensors, and the maximum wire length between the LDC1612 and the LC tank is based on the sensor frequency. The "LDC131x-LDC161x_Config" sheet in the LDC Tools excel calculator (found here) can calculate this maximum distance. I also recommend using the "Spiral_Inductor_Designer" sheet to design the coils. The coil parameters can be imported in the the LDC161x Config sheet to make the maximum distance estimation more accurate.

Note that the longer wires will make the system more susceptible to EMI. I suggest adding in footprints for filter capacitors and possibly a common-mode choke in case they are needed. The recommended locations for these passives are in both the LDC1612EVM User's Guide as well as this EMI app note.

    Best Regards,
