Hi,

In TIDEP-0092 reference design schematics, I see a number of components with DNI=TRUE. Are these 'Do Not Include' components meant for variants of the board? If not, wouldn't it be easier not to show these components on the board to minimize chances of these getting populated during board assembly?

Hello John,

Yes, these are 'Do Not Include' components that may provide some additional functionality and allow for optional paths that increase the functionality of the board. Sometimes you will also see 'DNP' used interchangeably with 'DNI', which just stands for 'Do Not Populate'. When the gerbers are generated it will be clearly marked in the assembly files and pick and place files so that there should be no mistakes when assembling the board. Any fabrication house should be very familiar with the concept and should have no trouble with properly assembling the board based on the DNI markings. We have had many boards made and have not had any issues with components accidentally being populated.

Hello John,

There is no 'DNI' indication on the board, the DNI components are simply not soldered onto the board. So there are just empty pads where the components can be soldered later if needed.

Hello John,

The schematic markings are handled by Altium. First, you need to create a variant and set the desired part to 'Not Fitted' for that variant. Altium will then mark these as DNP when you generate the gerbers/schematic/etc for that variant.
