Is the radar from the IWR1642 a cross-section or can it scan an area and provide 3D points for detection points?

By this I mean at a depth, say 2Meters, I know it can detect where an item is left/right but I want to know if it can also detect if it the object is top-left / lower-right. Maybe it can only tell me right left and how much to the right or left and the depth but not up/down as well. So to clarify, my question is, can the IWR1642 provide 3D points (how much in the Up/Down direction as well as Left/Right and depth)?

Hi, Stephan:

The antenna pattern on IWR1642BOOST only contains antenna at same elevation level. Therefore, it can only provide angle information on azimuth angle (the sense of left and right), and it can not give you the elevation angle (top or down).

However, we also have AWR1642BOOST-ODS evaluation module. The antenna array is different and can give you both azimuth and elevation angle information. You can find more information at: www.ti.com/.../AWR1642BOOST-ODS

What would you suggest for a module like AWR1642BOOST-ODS, but longer range say, 50Meters or more( Ideal would be up to say 100meters), but we could get by with around 50 meters. The AWR1642BOOST-ODS would be good for up to 15 m but that is too short range for us.

I would agree with your conclusion. And you can always come up with your own PCB board and your new design of antenna pattern to cover all your needs.

Thanks again. We will work with the TI demo boards for now. We have an Antenna guy, so it would be good to get it to a point where we can move it on to our own board.
