LM96163: Eliminate use of Remote Diode

Part Number: LM96163

Hello Team,

We are using LM96163 fan controller IC for controlling speed (PWM) of Fan based on Tacho output from Fan driver IC. In board, we have multiple temperature sensors which are driven by the processor over I2C.

and based on temperature value and output of tachometer from Fan driver IC we are controlling PWM to control the speed of Fan.

Here question is, we have no need to use a remote diode to control fan speed, so can we eliminate the use of an external transistor. or what are the HW changes required for the D+/D- lines for this?

While performing testing with EVM, while we are removing the connection of the external transistor from D+/D- lines, we can not able to control speed over I2C, Fan was driving at full speed.

And instead of keep pins floating, if we are shorting D+ & D- pins each other we can control fan speed over I2C.

Please suggest what are the correct HW D+/D- line connection in case of not using remote sensor features.

Regards,

Nimesh Rana
