IWR6843ISK-ODS: Using mmWave SDK 3.02.00.04 with IWR6843ISK-ODS

Hi,

I have a setup with the IWR6843ISK-ODS board and I am interested in the raw data output of the sensor. I already followed the instructions of the “ODS Point Cloud User Guide” and it seems to work fine for me. I use an own application to read out the raw data from the sensor. The x,y,z-coordinates of the detected objects makes sense for me.

Now, I want to try out the mmWave SDK. I use the version 3.02.00.04. The setup is the same as before. However, the resulting x,y,z-coordinates of the detected objects makes no sense to me.

I know that the output format of SDK and ODS application is different what I respect in my application. There is also the recommendation to use the “ODS Point Cloud User Guide” in the thread http://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors/f/1023/t/794127?IWR6843ISK-ODS-Which-verison-of-MMWAVE-SDK-can-support-IWR6843ISK-ODS- because the visualization is different.

Is the visualization different due to incorrect raw data (x,y,z coordinates) from the SDK, which means that the SDK cannot be used with the IWR6843ISK-ODS?

Hi Tony,

The IWR6843ISK-ODS antenna module has a different antenna pattern and hence requires a different Angle of Arrival computation method. SDK 3.2.0.4 does not support the AoA algorithm required for the ODS antenna module which results in incorrect x,z,y co-ordinates if you use this SDK with IWR6843ISK-ODS.

Hi Nitin,

thanks a lot for your feedback. Now, it is clearer for me. I assumed that the lab0025_ods_point_cloud demo is based on the SDK 3.1.1.2 version due to the defines in “mmwave_sdk_version.h” (lines 44-47)

If I understand the message in the referenced thread correctly, then my assumption is wrong and only the following demos can be used with the ODS module (out of the box):

lab0020_pplcount_Overhead
lab0025_ods_point_cloud

Is it really like that?

Sorry, I missed the Multiple Gesture and Motion detection demo which also uses the IWR6843ISK-ODS antenna module. So currently, the following 3 labs work with the ODS antenna module:
