I need to detect a lock.

There is a 'U' shaped hook. Something like this : @images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/.../51r5D-CSV2L._SY450_.jpg

Inside which a metal bar comes in, and that;s how its locked. I need to detect the presence of the metal bar inside the 'U' shaped hook. The sensing distance required is 165mm. And the metal is coated with grease.

Can you please tell me if LDC0851 will work for the required distance? I need to work this as a switch for change detection.

Hello Krishanu,

Unfortunately inductive sensing is not suitable for this application. The inductive sensing devices can detect metal targets at a distance of roughly 50% of the coil's diameter. The 165mm detection distance requires a coil that is too large for the devices to drive.

If not inductive sensor, can you please suggest which proximity sensor can be used. The concern is, the metal that is to be detected is coated with grease and the distance is 165mm.

Krishanu,

An ultrasonic sensor is able to detect an object at 165mm. You can consider using the PGA460 with a high-frequency (180-480 kHz) mono-static transducer. Please refer to the PGA460 Ultrasonic Module Hardware and Software Optimization for the benefits of a high-frequency transducer. In summary, high-frequency transducers enable very short range detection (down to 1~5cm) and up to +1m at high-accuracy, and a have narrow field of view (5~15 degrees) to avoid side lope reflections. You can find a list of transducer part numbers here (PGA460 Transducer & Transformer Listing) which you can sort by frequency and field of view.
