TMP117: Solution to increase the temperature sensing contact area

Part Number: TMP117
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-01624

Hi SIr/Mam,

I just came across the TMP117 sensor and frankly quite astonished with the amount of accuracy along with such a small form factor. I have gone through various designs such as TIDA-01624 document and i have also seen the videos of wearable patch. I am very much excited to make some good application/device/product using the same. I have some questions which are holding me back, it will be great if somebody can help me finding answers for these questions.

1) Since it has mentioned that the TMP117 can be directly used in contact with the skin, is it compliant to be shockproof, ESD proof and safe for kids as well as adult.

2) I see that the surface area of the sensor is very small, so i feel it will be challenging from the casing design point of view to make sure the user has maintained a good and continuous contact with the sensor.

3) Is there any other material or solution available with TI using which its possible to increase the contact surface of the sensor so that making the casing should be relatively easy. Also it will be great if you can share comment about the effect of the material on the accuracy of 0.1 degree celsius.

4) I have heard that its better to use the flexible pcb for better and quicker response from the sensor, but i am quite worried about the ruggedness of device if made using flexible device. Please share some feedback

It will be great if somebody can share their thoughts about the points mentioned above. Thanks.

  • Hi Piyush,

1a. We don't have a standard for shockproof.

1b. The device meets JEDEC ESD specifications as described in Section 6.2 ESD Ratings section of the datasheet.

1c. We make no claim our devices are "safe" for kids or adults.

    3. There are two application notes regarding wearables on the Technical Documents section of the TMP117 product page. http://www.ti.com/product/TMP117/technicaldocuments

    4. It all depends on your design goals. There is a device on the market today which is flex PCB wrapped in only tape/foam. It is intended to be disposable.

    Thanks,

    Ren
