IWR1642BOOST: mmwave OTA Radiated antenna measurements

Part Number: IWR1642BOOST

Hi,

We would like to do OTA antenna measurements on our 77-81GHz mmwave board to view all the possible radiation characteristics including antenna pattern, gain, polarization, input impedance, S11, etc.  This will help us optimize our FOV for our application.

We are looking into a varied of options to test this out.  One requirement is that we have access to a conducted sample.  Does TI have any development board where the RF path is brought out to a SMA, Waveguide, 1mm connector etc.

Also is it necessary to generate a CW signal in test mode for the OTA test?

Has TI any experience running either 60GHz or 77-81GHz mmwave sensors through OTA test chambers?

Thanks,
Jason

  • Hello,

Currently all the TI EVMs are Radiated mechanism through the etched antennas on the board.

If you want individually validate the Tx antenna and Rx antenna measurements then CW signal in test mode is needed. However, if the Tx and Rx antennas are similar then you could get combined response of Tx and Rx together.

In case of conventional radiation pattern measurement, E(I)RP at test antenna is measured only by TX or Rx side in CW Mode. Antenna gain is obtained by comparing to reference isotropic antenna.

For the Radiation pattern measurement (through regular chirping mode is done) using a corner reflector at a know distance from the radar. The reflected power is measured using ADC. This measurement is repeated for Azimuth orientation form -60 to 60 Deg and for elevation orientation it is measurement from -30 deg to 30 deg. Keeping bore sight as a reference value, Radiation pattern is plotted either side of bore sight.

This provides the combined radiation pattern for both Tx and Rx together.

For Antenna radiation pattern testing, Board and Antennas need to be kept far field distance, For 77GHz products approximately 60cm long chamber should suffice to test this mmWave sensor.

There are few OTA chambers available for this purpose as shown below.
