IWR6843ISK: 2D MIMO Array Configuration (Azimuth and Elevation Estimation)

Part Number: IWR6843ISK

Hi, I am trying to build a radar imaging system.

When reading the document MIMO Radar, there is a short description about the 2d array:

I am really confused about the above diagram and wondering how one additional Tx antenna results in the virtual 2d array? It would be grateful if someone could share some more details how to design 2d MIMO array and the background theory.

Thanks.

  • Hey Tom,

try to imagine how the Tx setup is copied and placed to all points that are occupied by Rx antennas. If you do this, you end up with four copies of the Tx setup, each one slightly shifted to span the lower setup.

The key to realize a 2D array is to have not only a ULA (antennas all in one line) but to have them spanning a plane as done by the Tx antennas.

    Best Regards

  • Thank you very much.

Do you have more details about how to design such a URA with TI tools? I am new to TI products.

    Cheers

  • Antenna placement is a matter of physicality, so I don't see a way of designing this with SW tools apart from simulations. Even more, array theory is independent of TI products and even radar technology.

Maybe confer a book about general array signal processing if you are interested into this topic.
