IWR1443: How to calculate the Range of the detected object from OUTPUT data of IWR1443 Radar Sensor

Hi,

We are running mmwDemo lab on 1443 ES3.0 device with mmwave_sdk_2_01_00_04.

we are able to receive the data. In that data we can able to find the Number of objects detected and their parameters.

Range Index, Doppler Index, Peak Value, X,Y,Z coordinates. How to calculate the range of each detected objects using these parameters? is there any formula for it. Please share it.

Hi Harish,

The Range Index value in the detected object structure corresponds to the Range-FFT bin index for that particular peak. It can be converted to Physical range in meters using the following formula:

Range = Range Index x Range Resolution. (where Range Resolution depends upon your chirp and frame parameters for your configuration)

The formulas for calculating Range and Velocity are available in the 16xx OOB demo doxygen (same applies to 14xx as well) available in SDK 2.1.0.4 at the following path:

Thanks Nitin.

With that formula I can able to calculate the distance.

But, Range resolution is 0.0408m means 4cm. It' makes big difference for high accuracy applications.How to reduce this range resolution to mm?.

I'm following Measuring Object Height with mmWave Radar experiment from this path ti\mmwave_industrial_toolbox_3_6_2\experiments.

Hi Harish,

Please refer to the following thread to understand the difference between Resolution and Accuracy.

IWR1443BOOST: Sub-millimeter accuracy distance measurement on a short range (from 5 to 30cm)

Once you understand the difference, note It is possible to get range accuracy (for a single target) better than range resolution using zoom FFT and this technique is demonstrated in TI's High Accuracy Lab available in mmWave Industrial Toolbox. Please refer to the Lab user guide which provides step by step instructions on running the pre-compiled demo binaries as well as how to build the binaries from source code.

NOTE: The 14xx - High Accuracy Lab runs on IWR1443 ES2.0 and has not been updated for IWR1443 ES3.0. So if you have an IWR1443 ES3.0 board, please follow the instructions provided in the following thread to make the necessary code and projectspec updates to port it to ES3.0
