HI together,

here on e2e and I believe in some whitepapers it says that elevation angle is +/- 15 degrees and azimuth is +/- 60 degrees. However, in the User Guide we're only given an antenna pattern (Figure 11). So, how is the FOV defined? By the 0 dB crossings? Usually - when referring to beampatterns - the 3dB / FWHM bandwidth is a common figure to give.

Hello ,

Typically in RF circuits the BW is defined as 3dB points. In the antenna pattern plots you find in the user guide , a 3dB reduction from the peak gain is used to define the FOV.

But then, azimuth FOV would be +/- 30°. Reduction from peak gain to +/-60° is more like 10 dB.

I think the FOV is mentioned as 60deg not +-60deg. Could you point to the location you referring to?

Hi Vivek,

in the following posts, TI officials claim an FOV of +/-60°:

On the product page of my available distributor, the FOV is even stated as +/-80° in azimuth (https://www.mouser.de/new/texas-instruments/ti-awr1642boost-ods-evaluation-module/)

By the way, can you point to the location where you think it is mentioned that the FOV is only 60° in total? There seems to no official document for the AWR1642BOOST giving that information.

Hello ,

When you are talking about the antenna alone then 3dB point is used to define the FOV. But in a complete sensor the FOV will depend on the range and RCS you are targeting in your system. For smaller range the gain needed is lower , hence you can view objects at larger angles. Similarly if the RCS of the object is larger you need smaller gain and can view the object at larger angles.

So basically you need to compute the gain you need in your use case and based on that you can compute the FOV for your use case with a given antenna design.

this makes perfectly sense, thank you. One last question: According to app note SWRA554, the maximum FOV depends on inter-antenna spacing. Is it lambda/2 for the AWR1642BOOST?

That's right, the spacing on the EVM is lamda/2.
