IWR1642BOOST: FW update issues

Part Number: IWR1642BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MMWAVEICBOOST, IWR6843ISK, UNIFLASH, IWR6843

hi,

with customer, we are getting confidence with the mmWave technology and are facing some challenges.

We have two eval boards:

  • IWR1642BOOST
  • IWR6843ISK + MMWAVEICBOOST

We downloaded mmwave_sdk_03_03_00_03 SDK and tried to update the firmware on IWR68xx:

  • turned off the power
  • selected SOP0 and SOP2 jumpers
  • checked if dip switch has proper configuration regards to user manual
  • turned on the power supply (5V, 3A, Rigol DP832)
  • uploaded firmware by using uniflash and C:\ti\mmwave_sdk_03_03_00_03\packages\ti\demo\xwr68xx\mmw\xwr68xx_mmw_demo.bin firmware. Ended with “Program Load completed successfully.”
  • turned off the power supply
  • removed SOP2 jumper
  • turned on the power supply

At the end we tried to connect by using both offline and online mmWave Demo GUI v 3.3.

The console is empty even after few ‘send config’ button clicks (while com ports was properly detected).

After a lot of experiments we discovered that the board works perfectly when using IWR64xx in version 3.2 firmware (on IWR68xx board).

The IWR64xx 3.3, IWR68xx 3.2 and IWR68 xx 3.3 firmware don’t work (while COM ports are properly detected but we not able to send configuration – console window is clear).

Similar story with IWR1642BOOST: we are able to upload firmware but in this case none of them works.

any suggestion?

thansk a lot in advance

KR

Vincenzo

Could you please explain how to upload this firmware properly?

  • Hi Vincenzo,

Thank you for the detailed description.

    1. Please confirm the ES version of the IWR6843 device on your IWR6843ISK. You can determine the ES version by looking at the device markings as explained in 68xx ISK - mmWave SDK Demo - DSP Version under Industrial Toolbox.

Note that SDK 3.2 is compatible with ES1.0 only and SDK 3.3 is compatible only with ES2.0 devices. Since you mentioned that the demo firmware from SDK 3.2 works on your EVM, it appears that you have an ES1.0 board.

    2. Which firmware did you flash on the IWR1642BOOST EVM (SDK version, firmware file name)?

    3. Please confirm the ES version for your IWR1642BOOST by checking the device marking on the chip as mentioned in IWR1642 Device Errata. Does the last line read 502AC or 502 on the chip?

    Regards
