PGA450-Q1: What does feature "Fully Integrated" mean?

Part Number: PGA450-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC1000-Q1, PGA460-Q1, TDC1000

As seen in part number TDC1000-Q1 has feature of TIme of Flight and PGA450-Q1 has Fullly Integrated feature. What is the difference between Fully Integrated and Time of Flight?

  • HI Nihar,

The "fully integrated" aspect of the PGA family refers to the integrated digital signal processing block of the PGA450-Q1, which performs the digital filtering and echo envelope generation from the raw ultrasonic signal. By generating the echo envelope, the device is then able to find the time-of-flight through threshold comparison, and report the time-of-flight value to the master controller.

Both the PGA and TDC devices include some amount of analog front end gain to normalize the ultrasonic echo; however, the TDC1000 is only able to generate zero-crossing based pulses using a subset of the threshold capabilities that the PGA450-Q1 is otherwise able to offer with greater flexibility and resolution. I recommend that you consider the latest ultrasonic sensing device, the PGA460-Q1, which offers superior performance, lower cost, and a smaller package compared to the older PGA450-Q1.
