TMP116: TMP116 Thermal Time Constant

Hi

Previously we are using LMT85 ambient temperature reading. But since we are trying to use digital temperature instead.

We plan to use the TMP116, however we can not find thermal time constant data (LMT85 has it on the datasheet).

Is there any thermal time constant data of TMP116? (measuring still air temperature via open solder mask in the other side of PCB)

    Hi Muhammad,

    Thank you for posting. Let me check and see if we have any still air response data for the TMP116 that might be useful.

    Keep in mind that in still air, package & board size will be the most significant factor in determining the thermal response time. You should consider using as small a board as possible or placing a cut-out in your board around the TMP116 to provide faster response.

    Appreciate on your effort.

    Noted on the board size, we already consider to create cut out around the sensor and leave small PCB bridge for all signals.

    Do we need to apply solder paste on the other side of the PCB (ambient temperature sensing part)?

    Hi Muhammad,

    Thank you for your patience. I've sent you a friend request on E2E so I can send you some TMP117 thermal response results via private message. This device is very similar to the TMP116 and the testing was done in the same package.

    To answer your question, if this was just exposed copper on the bottom side then yes, you should add solder paste to protect the copper from corrosion. If your board will have an ENIG gold coating over exposed copper then it should be fine without solder paste, as this coating will help protect it from corrosion.
