Hello support team,

To what extent is performance of mmWave radar affected by welding fume?
A customer is studying to use ToF and Lidar for "people count" in shipyard where welding fume exists. Performance of these sensors were significantly affected by welding fume. We would like to know if mmWave radar could be an alternative solution. The location is 5mx5m area. A sensor will be set at 3m height.

Hi Katsuhiro-san

Yes, mmWave sensor could be alternative technology here. As compared to ToF and Lidar, mmWave sensor should perform better in this case, as electromagnetic signals would not be affected significantly due to fumes.

Hello Katsuhiro-san

We do not have data for this exact scenario. However, welding fume mostly gaseous in nature (assuming area is filled with more gas than the metal particle) then you could review below two experiments conduced with our mmWave sensor devices. This would be challenging for TOF and Lidar devices.

1) Detecting Gesture Motions through Smoke or Glass
