PGA460PSM-EVM: Expanding Range of measurement

Part Number: PGA460PSM-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA460, PGA460-Q1, MSP-EXP430F5529LP,

We are using the GUI with the PGA460 EVM, we wanted to better understand the best way to evaluate this device in the range of 2-3cm cm to 50cm-60cm.

Is way to analyze the PGA460 for such distances using the ultrasonic transducer in transceiver mode?

Can this be done in the GUI or does this need to be done in directly communicating with the device?

Thanks,
Nick

  • Hi Nick,

For ranging of 2~60cm, you will need to use a different transducer from what is offered by default on the PGA460-Q1 EVM. For a list of high-frequency transducers and transformers is available at: PGA460 Transducer & Transformer Listing

The EVM's default transducer (PUI UTR-1440K-TT-R, Murata MA58MF14-7N,  Murata MA40H1S-R) will only reach downwards of 15cm.

For ranging to sub-10m distances, a mono-static high-frequency transducer (180-480kHz) or a bi-static transducer pair (separate transmit and receive transducers) will be required. The PGA460 Ultrasonic Module Hardware and Software Optimization explains the concept of transducer frequency as a function of range, field of view, and accuracy.

You can re-purpose the MSP-EXP430F5529LP from the PGA460-Q1 EVM to run any PGA460 module or PGA460PSM-EVM on the GUI.
