DCA1000EVM: DCA1000EVM: Timeout Error! Unable to read FPGA Version. [error -5] on mmWaveStudio and FPGA DLL shows 1.0.

Part Number: DCA1000EVM

Hi experts,

I've followed the mmWaveStudio user guide,DCA1000EVM Data Caputure Card user guide and the DCA1000 training video very strictly. As the user guides and training video show, there were no previous issues including the Ethernet connection mentioned in the forum, but when I tried "SetUp DCA1000", I received the following error message:Timeout Error! System disconnected and then it shows Unable to read FPGA Version. [error -5].

I have browsed and tried some of the solutions mentioned before in the forum, but it didn't work. At the same time I noticed that the FPGA DLL version of the user guide and some forum postings is 2.7 but the FPGA DLL I show here is 1.0. Will this difference cause problems?

But when I tried on my colleague's desktop, the FPGA DLL version was also displayed as 1.0, but there was no "Timeout Error! System disconnected and then it shows Unable to read FPGA Version. [Error -5].".And finally the .bin file  can be generated correctly as trianing video shows.

So I'm weird and don't know why this happened, I hope someone gives me a solution so I can continue to enjoy the device.

Thanks very much!

  • Hi,

    Sorry for the delay,

We will be able to get back to you in a few days

    thank you

    Cesar

  • Ok, I‘m waiting for your some good suggestions, thank you

  •  Hello,

What is the version of the mmwave studio you are using?  Can you make sure you are using the latest mmwave studio available at the following link: http://www.ti.com/tool/MMWAVE-STUDIO

Also have you purchased the DCA1000 online recently?

    Regards,

    Vivek

  • Hi,

Yes,I use the latest version of mmWaveStudio provided by the above link, which is the 02.01.00.00 version. The DCA1000 I use now was purchased online around October to November. Following is a screenshot of the shortcut of mmWaveStudio I use.

And because my FPGA DLL version shows 1.0,it's different from the training videos and some of the posters, this also confuses me . Based on this fact, I also thought about whether the mmWaveStudio version does not match, so I also tried to download and use the previous version provided by the above link, which is 01.00.00.00 Version and this version is also used in the training video demo, but it still has these same problems I described.

    thanks.

  • I also have been unable to read the FPGA version using the DCA1000 connected through a boost board to a 6843.   Everything up to hitting the button "Set up DCA1000" looks good, but when I click that, I get :

    10:45:09] [RadarAPI]: ar1.CaptureCardConfig_EthInit("192.168.33.30", "192.168.33.180", "12:34:56:78:90:12", 4096, 4098)
    [10:45:11] ConnectRFDCCard Status: RRFDCCARD_SUCCESS
[10:45:11] Ethernet Cable is disconnected Please check.....!!!

Sometimes the FPGA version message pops up with the version being 0.0.0.0 - other times the version is just "FPGA version" or some error message.   I may try trying to redownload the FPGA code on the DCA1000     It is strange it says my ethernet is disconnected, because it does identify the DCA1000 IP address as being 192.168.33.180    I believe my computers ethernet port is working properly.   When I try to capture a frame, the files that do get created show as being 0 length.      I may try running all this on another computer.

  • I have also seen that some people also have the problem with not connection to Ethernet, but this problem no longer exists after he changed the Network cable. By the way, could you tell me how I can redownload FPGA code in DCA1000, this may be a way to try for my problem, thank you.

  • Hello,

The DLL version 1.0 that you are seeing is correct , that is what is expected In the latest mmwave studio 2.1.

Inorder to reflash the FPGA code in the DCA1000 you can refer to the DCA1000 user manual for instructions (http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/spruij4a/spruij4a.pdf) , section 9. The FPGA binary file is available in the mmwave studio package , use the record version of the file.

  • I got a USB 2.0 ethernet adapter - and it allowed me to get past the ethernet not found error I had when I used the ethernet connection that came with my laptop.  (my laptop ethernet connection had worked fine on everything else).    But I found I still had a problem where I would get the FPGA version read back as 0.0.0.0 or "FPGA Version" or something clearly wrong.   I went through the directions on "FPGA programming" of section 9 of spruij4a.pdf to reprogram the FPGA - but sadly, I still have the same problem and I still get the message "Unable to read FPGA Version. [error -5]" in the log file.

  • Hi,

Thank you for answering my questions  about the DLL version and and suggestions. I tried to reflash the FPGA, but the problems I mentioned before still exist. In the past two days, I tried the same operation on a desktop and a laptop of someone else, as shown in the training videos and user guides, but the strange thing is that whether it is on someone else ’s desktop or laptop, this problem above will never happen again. In addition, I noticed that the operating system of their desktop and laptop are both win10 but the operating system of my laptop is win7.

Further I noticed that although the training video shows that using win7 system can work without problems, the version of mmwave studio in the video is 1.0. So is it possible that mmwave studio version can no longer be applied to win7 system after upgrading to 2.1. In other words, if I want to use mmwave studio on win7 system,do I have to use the old version of mmwave studio, which is the same version 1.0 as in the training video?

Based on the above ideas, I downloaded the 1.0 old version of mmwave studio again and tried it on my laptop again. Unfortunately, the same problem persists. So I am really very confused now, can you give some further suggestions, thanks in advance.

  • I have the same problem as you mentioned. But strangely, when I tried the same operation on a desktop and a laptop of someone else, this problem above will never happen again. In addition, I noticed that the operating system of their desktop and laptop are both win10 but the operating system of my laptop is win7. So Is it possible that 2.1 version of mmwavestdio is no longer applicable to win7 systems?
