IWR6843: IWR6843 mmWave - Blind spots, working range and mounting limitations

Part Number: IWR6843

Hi Team

1. I would like to use a sensor for a mobile robot application where the obstacle tracking like glass and should be of minimum working range say like 20mm - 300mm distance. Would like to also know what is the minimum working range of this sensor, does the mmwave IWR6843 sensor have any blind spot region?. These info were not provided on the spec sheet.

2. Also there was a confusing thing that the angular area of coverage is 130deg and the resolution is 15deg, so do does this mean that we could get only 8 steps (130/15) of incremental angle data totally, ie; meaning it can only detect objects at 15deg, 30deg, 45deg, etc.. 130deg?

3. Also is there any limitation in packing the sensor on to the robot, say like should the entire board be exposed to the outer environment without covering it?

Please help me out with this query ASAP. Also we would like to have your suggestions on helping us out with any sensor with short working range which has a small blind spot and which can detect glass as well..

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi Gokul,

I've asked an expert to look into this and we should have an answer for you in the next few days.

    Cheers,

    Akash

  • Hey Akash,

Thank you for following up with this thread. It has been couple of days I hope after I raised this issue. How long should I have to wait for a reply. I would like to get the query resolved ASAP.

Please push this a little bit into priority as we are running out of time for a sensor selection.

    Thank you!

Feedback : I wish there should be some technical support immediate contact email id or number where these kind of queries, since TI being such a great firm on semiconductor industry. Idea of forum is to provide a better approach for common kind of queries or FAQs.

  • Hi Akash and Team

It has been more than a week now. Our timeline for selection is already over, still we haven't received any reply from you guys.

I am so sorry to say this, we get a pathetic technical support service from Ti via forum

    Regards

  • Hi Gokul,

Apologize for the delay. Please see the inline response:

[Yogesh] The target needs to be min 3.75 cm from the radar.

130deg?

[Yogesh] Angular resolution is the difference in angle required for the radar sensor to distinguish two different objects. It IS NOT a measure of accuracy.

    3. Also is there any limitation in packing the sensor on to the robot, say like should the entire board be exposed to the outer environment without covering it?

[Yogesh] Please see section 5 for recommendation: http://www.ti.com/lit/an/spracg5/spracg5.pdf

Let us know if you need more information.

    Thanks
