IWR6843ISK-ODS: Can antenna plug-in module board synchronize with an external oscillator?

Hello,

I have IWR6843ISK-ODS (antenna module), mmWaveICBoost, and DCA1000EVM.

I want to synchronize the antenna module with an external reference oscillator to synchronize the frequency and phase with another devices' them.

The sensor chip IWR6843 supports external oscillator and externally driven clock at 40 MHz, however, IWR6843ISK-ODS is already connected to a crystal on the board.

The board has a OSC_CLK_OUT pin, but no IN. It has SYNC_IN pin but it should be used for synchronizing the start timing of chirp radiation, not for the frequency reference, I guess.

Is there any method to synchronize the antenna module's frequency with an external reference oscillator? e.g., reference oscillator input pin (maybe connect to ball number B15 CLK_P of IWR6843) or controlling PLL with the external synchronization pulse. Or, if I re-solder the antenna module's port of the crystal, the board can operates with an external oscillator?

Hi User,

Yes, you could feed external clock (40Mhz) on the CLKP pin (1.8V swing) and CLKM should be ground. There is phase noise requirement on the external clock pin to ensure device performance to meet the datasheet specification numbers.

So, if I want to synchronize the board with another devices, re-soldering is the "only" way, right?

I understand of course it is not recommended and TI takes no responsibility for that.

Hi User,

Yes, it is not recommended, IWR6843ISK-ODS are built for stand alone operation, and it is not scoped to synchronize with external devices, However IWR6843 device does support external clocking option apart from the default crystal oscillator mode as per above specification.

Hence, if you would like to synchronize another devices on IWR6843ISK/ODS you may have to solder CLKP (With the external clock only 1.8V peak to peak AC coupled) along with CLKM grounded. If this condition is not followed it may permanently damage the device. Hence care need to be taken while soldering and applying external signal to the device.
